Like a Prayer —en español: Como una oración— es el cuarto álbum de estudio de la cantante estadounidense Madonna, producido por ella, Stephen Bray, Patrick Leonard y Prince. Fue lanzado el 21 de marzo de 1989 por el sello discográfico Sire Records,
recibiendo críticas muy buenas, nombrándolo como el mejor álbum de la
primera década de la carrera de Madonna. Actualmente se lo sigue
considerando como uno de los mejores álbumes de estudio de Madonna. La RIAA lo certificó 'cuatro veces Platino' el 16 de julio de 1997, reconociendo las cuatro millones de copias vendidas en Estados Unidos, convirtiéndose en su séptimo álbum mejor vendido en este país, vendió más de 1.7 millones de copias en el Reino Unido.A nivel mundial, el álbum ha vendido más de 19 millones de copias.
El 21 de marzo de 1989 fue lanzado al mercado el esperadísimo nuevo álbum de Madonna: Like a Prayer. El lanzamiento publicitario a nivel mundial fue enorme. Además de la larga espera desde 1986, que editó su último álbum de estudio True Blue, y la gigantesca polémica suscitada por el video musical de la canción que da título al álbum; la reacción del público y ventas fue inmediata y espectacular.
El álbum incorpora elementos de pop, dance, rock, góspel, soul y funk en las distintas canciones que lo forman. La revista Rolling Stone denominó al álbum como "lo más cerca que ha estado la música pop del arte". El álbum fue grabado en 1988 junto a los ya re-nombrados productores Patrick Leonard y Stephen Bray; a lo que también se suma un dueto con el cantante Prince. Like a Prayer
es quizás el álbum mas personal de la carrera de Madonna, incluyendo
distintos temas relacionados con su vida personal. Es allí donde incluye
la primera de las tantas canciones a través de su carrera en la cual
Madonna habla abiertamente acerca de la muerte de su madre, "Promise to Try"; Madonna incluso dedica el álbum a my mother who taught me to pray (a mi madre, quien me enseñó a orar). El álbum también abarca su fallido matrimonio con el actor Sean Penn en la canción "Till Death Do Us Part".
Antes del lanzamiento comercial del primer sencillo del álbum, la compañía de refrescos Pepsi
decidió usar la canción como parte de una campaña publicitaria de sus
bebidas incluyendo la participación de la propia Madonna. Sumado a esto,
la empresa firmó un contrato como patrocinadora de la que sería la
próxima gira de Madonna, Blond Ambition Tour. El comercial fue televisado dos veces antes de la publicación del video musical de la canción en la cadena MTV. Pepsi desconocía la controvertida temática del video: Madonna es testigo de un asesinato, besa a un santo negro (San Benito de Palermo), se producen estigmas
en sus manos después de tocar un cuchillo y baila ante cruces ardiendo.
Todo esto originó que diversos sectores religiosos se manifestaran en
contra de Madonna y boicotearan la empresa, por lo que Pepsi no tuvo
otra opción que cancelar el comercial; a pesar de lo cual, Madonna
conservó los 5 millones de dólares propuestos en el contrato.
El álbum debutó en el puesto número once de la lista Billboard 200 en Estados Unidos,
aunque tres semanas después llegó al número uno del listado
permaneciendo allí seis semanas consecutivas. El álbum fue número en Estados Unidos y el Reino Unido.
Vendió mas de cuatro millones de copias en Estados Unidos, consiguiendo
la certificación de cuatro discos de platino y 1.2 millones de copias
en el Reino Unido.
Like a Prayer esta considerado, junto a Ray of Light (1998) y Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005)
como uno de los mejores álbumes de su carrera, recibiendo las mejores
críticas a la vez que teniendo un gran éxito en muchos aspectos.
De acuerdo con la lista publicada por la revista Time el 13 de noviembre de 2006, Like a Prayer es uno de los 100 mejores álbumes de todos los tiempos. En 2003, la revista Rolling Stone ubicó al álbum en el puesto #237 de "los 500 mejores álbumes de todos los tiempos". Aparte de esto, el álbum fue incluido en el libro "1001 discos que hay que escuchar antes de morir".
